After graduating from Law School in TCD, Patrick spent 10 years working in advertising agencies in London and Dublin. It was there that he developed his interest in the old railway travel posters of the 1930s and 1940s with their bold use of typography and romantic style of artwork. Establishing The Canvas Works in Kinsale in 2007, Patrick decided to create a range of retro style travel posters that would pay homage to this bygone age. Initially working online, he opened his gallery in 2012 from where he creates and prints his entire collection of vintage style travel prints.

Brief History of Irish Travel Posters
Irish travel posters became prominent in the 1920s, with Great Southern Railways (GSR) commissioning artwork to promote Ireland’s landscapes and tourist destinations. In the 1930s and 1940s, Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) continued the tradition, producing stylized posters showcasing destinations like Killarney and the Cliffs of Moher, often influenced by Art Deco design. By the 1950s and 1960s, Bord Fáilte took over, gradually shifting toward photography-based advertisements.
Our Travel Poster Design Process
Our Irish travel poster design process begings with image origination. We'll either take photos or source images online which we use as the base for our illustrations. We typically use Gills Sans as the typeface and will then devise the ribbon text and other smaller copy details. Typically the entire travel poster design process can take 3-4 weeks. Most of our designs mirror the vertical poster format of the original screen printed travel posters. All our travel posters are printed in our Kinsale gallery.
